iracles from Mia began after the death of our precious Mia Margaret, who died at the age of 17 months. Her short life however was full of love as well as suffering. She was born at 29 weeks premature with MDK (bilateral multi cystic dysplastic kidney disease) a disease so rare that over 90% die in utero. By the third day of her life she was on dialysis, and she was to remain that way until one year of life when I, Georgianna Clements, (her mother) was to give her one of my kidneys. Because of the overwhelming cost of transplantation (even with good insurance coverage), and the lifelong medical care she would require, our families started up an organization just for her called Miracles for Mia. The news of this extraordinary baby spread quickly in our small town and the neighboring communities, and we found out how truly caring people could be, donating money, making us dinners and offering support. It was amazing.

Not long after her first birthday, Mia caught a lung virus called RSV. It took its toll on her little body and landed her in the hospital where she had to be put in a medicinal comma, and on a ventilator for five weeks. My husband and I lived at the hospital while our family and friends pitched in to take care of our house and our then 3 year old son Frankie. She went home after the 5 weeks with a reschedule for her transplant, noticeably more fragile than before the virus, but making small improvements. Still all the while expecting the transplant would happen and our little girl would live to show that miracles do happen.

She was home for three weeks when the unexpected happened, I went in to get her on the morning of April 17th 2004, and she had passed away in her sleep. We were crushed. How could we just give up the fight?

The answer came to us not long after, we would not quit fighting, just broaden the fight. We decided to change our name to Miracles from Mia and do what others so selflessly did for us, we would reach out to families of chronically ill children, and help them as much as we could. And that is what we are striving to do, help these children live a happier life by assisting their families whether it be financially or emotionally. We are here to help, and our daughter’s soul will live on in our hearts as well as in the families that are helped by our organization. Mia still has a message to send, her message is that miracles can happen, and they will.
